A Patient Advocate's View

Blue Cross checks to patients

It has come to our attention that Empire BC/BS is sending checks to patients for services provided by out of network providers. This is an error and we expect the computer glitch that is causing it to be fixed shortly. If you receive a check from Blue Cross, and you did not pay the doctor for services, please call the doctor listed on the explanation of benefits and ask them how they want to be paid for services. If your doctor accepted the assignment of benefits, they are entitled to this money and will bill you. You may not receive a bill for several months as some doctors use outsourced billing services and will not bill you until an inquiry is completed that shows that you cashed a check for reimbursement of services provided. Don’t wind up getting a collection letter because you ignore this message.
